Jos Wouters was born on October 28th 1959 in Wilrijk (Antwerp). He went to school at the Institute of St. Gabriel and the Institute of Pius X. He entered the abbey on August 28th 1978 and professed his solemn vows on August 28th 1983.
After his priestly studies he was ordained a priest by Bishop Paul Van den Berghe on September 7th 1986.
He then studied Theology and Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He later engaged in pastoral activities in the abbey’s meditation centre, in parishes and in the ecclesiastical court.
On Wednesday February 8th 2006 the Nobertine abbey community of Averbode has chosen Jos Wouters as its 52nd abbot, in succession of prelate Ulrik Edward Geniets, deceased on November 13th 2005.
The newly chosen prelate of Averbode will receive the abbatial blessing on Sunday May 7th 2006 out of the hand of His Eminence Godfried cardinal Danneels in the abbey church in Averbode.
